Artist Statement
All of the women on my mother’s side of the family have been taught to read tarot cards therefore I am continuing this family tradition by recreating the tarot card theme within my interdisciplinary artwork. My rendition of the cards appropriates symbols from the Rider Tarot Card Deck while incorporating my own style and utilizing human skulls to represent the remains of life. I use mediums that, although resilient, alter with age to reflect the time that has passed just as family traditions vary from generation to generation; ink fades, paper withers, metal tarnishes, and paint loses its color. I balance the fine line of decay both in medium and subject matter to emphasize that nothing is ever truly permanent.
In my recent works, I challenge society's impression of the human body by transcending the flesh and using bones as the gateway to exploring ideas around, sex, body image, and human emotion. Just as bones lie beneath the skin, often we allow these topics to remain dormant within us. I seek to bring my psychology background into my artwork and pull these provoking concepts to the surface to allow for conversation about otherwise taboo topics.
